Monday December 2nd Rally
Rallies against Bills 45 and 46 Monday in Edmonton and Calgary
All AUPE members, their families, friends and supporters in the labour movement are urged to attend rallies against Bills 45 and 46 in Edmonton and Calgary on Monday, Dec. 2.
The Edmonton rally will be at 4:45 p.m. at the Alberta Legislature.
The Calgary rally be at 6:30 p.m. at the McDougall Centre, 455 – 6 St. SW.
On Monday the Legislature will debate the bills, and we need to send a clear message to the Redford government that this draconian, undemocratic attack on all AUPE members’ collective bargaining rights must be defeated.
Bill 46 will eliminate Government of Alberta employees’ right to arbitration in collective bargaining disputes , allowing the government to impose any settlement it wants on its employees.
GOA employees do not have the legal right to strike, and Bill 45 will impose massive fines for any “illegal strike or strike threat”. The fines are $1 million a day, a three month suspension of union dues for the first day, and an additional month of dues suspension for each further day.
“These draconian measures are designed to rob AUPE members and other public sector workers of their constitutional right to collective bargaining,” said AUPE President Guy Smith. “There’s no telling who Premier Alison Redford will attack next. She is wiping out the legacy of Peter Lougheed. AUPE members must send a clear message to her on Monday that her actions will be costly for her and the Tory party.”
